The Blue Springs South boys basketball team came through when it counted to remain undefeated.

The visiting Jaguars outscored a fired-up Park Hill team 27-9 in the fourth quarter for a 65-47 victory Thursday night to improve to 5-0.

Park Hill (1-6) led 29-24 at halftime. South tied the score 38-38 after three quarters.

Justin Pitts totaled a career-high 27 points and Justin Puryear added 16 and Carl Martin 10 for the Jaguars.

“Park Hill played tough,” South coach Jimmy Cain said. “The kids stayed composed and we had a strong fourth quarter. We knew it would be a tough test.”

The Jaguars play Springfield Glendale at 4 p.m. Saturday at Branson High School in the Ozark Mountain Shootout.

OAK GROVE 56, SMITHVILLE 35: Host Oak Grove made it look easy in posting its fifth victory in six games.

Cole Doherty poured in 24 points and Jon Latshaw and Derrick Dow added eight each in leading the Panthers to the victory.

Oak Grove led 25-17 at halftime and slowly extended the margin over the final two quarters.

Girls

Balanced scoring will win basketball games.

That was the case for the Van Horn girls team Thursday night.

Eight players scored, led by Elizabeth Leroy’s 10 points, as the host Falcons drilled Kansas City East Christian 42-14 Thursday night. Three other players scored at least six points each.

East scored only one point in each of the first two quarters in trailing 19-2 at halftime.

“It was a nice win for the girls,” Van Horn coach Julie Crowell said. “It was the last game before we play the showdown on Dec. 22 (at the Independence Events Center against St. Mary’s). We have a lot of work to do between now and then but it was a nice game to get everyone involved.”

SMITHVILLE 51, GRAIN VALLEY 32: A strong Smithville team broke open a close game in the second half for the victory.
Grain Valley (3-3) trailed only 26-20 at halftime.

“I was really pleased with our first half,” Grain Valley coach Randy Draper said. “We just have to keep getting better.”

Rachel Reddell and Sarah Turner each scored six points and Courtney Sibert five in leading the Eagles.
