Prep basketball roundup: Balanced Eagles knock off Odessa

The Grain Valley girls basketball team used balanced scoring to advance to the semifinals of the Sonic Showdown.

Ten players scored as the Eagles upended Missouri River Valley Conference West rival Odessa 47-35 Monday night at Grain Valley High School.

“We struggled offensively, but the defense kept us in the game long enough to get us rolling,” Grain Valley coach Randy Draper said.

The Eagles (11-4) pulled away by outscoring Odessa 13-8 in the fourth quarter.

Lanae Wilke scored 14 points and Aereon Parker 11 to pace the Eagles, who meet Lincoln Prep at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinals.

ST. PIUS X 53, ST. MARY’S 18: A slow start cost the Trojans in the nonconference game.
St. Pius X led 12-2 after one quarter and went on to drop the Trojans to 2-10.

“We didn’t do a good job of finishing,” St. Mary’s coach Krista Daniels said. “We had a lot of good looks.”

Brittany Sapenaro’s six points were high for the Trojans.

PLEASANT HILL 52, OAK GROVE 28: A strong Pleasant Hill team was too much for Oak Grove (5-10) in another first-round game in the Sonic Showdown.

LEE’S SUMMIT NORTH 67, SEDALIA SMITH-COTTON 28: Lee’s Summit North improved to 13-3 to with the easy road victory.

“We shared the ball very well,” North coach Tricia Lillygren said. “I was pleased with that.”
The Broncos were never threatened after breaking to a 16-8 opening-quarter lead.

Jaden Powell and Imani Johnson each had 14 points, McKenzie Kellogg 13 and Erica Nelson 10 each to lead North.

PARK HILL SOUTH 57, RAYTOWN 53: The Suburban Middle Seven race tightened as visiting Park Hill South upset Raytown.

“We gave it away,” Raytown coach Jan Handley said. “We had a 15-point lead in the third quarter. We didn’t rebound and fouled.”

Timeka O’Neal upped her career scoring total to 1,235 in leading the Blue Jays (11-6, 4-1) with 25 points. Kelsey Barrett added 18.

LEE’S SUMMIT NORTH 71, RAYTOWN 55: North used a 20-10 halftime lead to defeat Raytown in the third-place game in the Truman Tournament on Saturday.

Imani Johnson had 24 points and Mollie Williams added a career-high 17 to lead the Broncos. Johnson also had 10 rebounds. Timeka O’Neal fired in 30 points with three 3-pointers and Kelsey Barrett 19 in carrying the brunt of the Raytown attack.

OAK GROVE 49, SUMMIT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 23: Host Oak Grove outscored Summit Christian 40-16 over the final three quarters to post its easiest victory of the season Saturday.

Oak Grove was led in scoring by Ashlee Hicks’ 13 points, Haley Kanak’s 12 and Brittany Douthitt’s 10.

ST. PIUS X 67, ST. MARY’S 35:
Sam Kenney could have used some scoring some help.
He scored a career-high 19 points as St. Mary’s suffered a home loss  Monday night.
No other Trojan scored more than eight points.

The Warriors turned the game into a rout by outscoring the Trojans (3-12) 41-17 in the second half.

BLUE SPRINGS 72, CARL JUNCTION 41: A big week for the Blue Springs boys basketball team was capped by capturing the Carl Junction Tournament title.

The Wildcats rolled past host Carl Junction Saturday as Deiondre Hall fired in 25 points, Marvin Clark added 14 and Jay Corwin had 10.

Corwin scored 49 points, Hall had 45 and Clark 44 in the three tournament games. Corwin was named the tournament’s most valuable player and Hall and Corwin were named to the all-tournament team.

“It was nice to play some other teams, and it was a good experience for our kids to travel,” Blue Springs coach Frank Wheeler said.

The Wildcats never left the outcome in doubt after rolling to a 47-20 halftime lead.

Blue Springs went 4-0 for the week to improve to 11-6.
