Van Horn’s baseball team had to settle for third place in last week’s Crossroads Conference Tournament at the Independence Athletic Complex.
The Falcons (10-4) opened with an 8-1 victory over St. Mary’s as Levi Kelsey pitched a three-hitter and struck out 11. Michael Thomason suffered the loss.
Van Horn then lost to a strong Summit Christian Academy team 19-0. Michael Payne was the losing pitcher. The game was stopped after three innings because of weather.
Van Horn bounced back to defeat Sherwood 9-7 in eight innings in the third-place game. Tyler Solomon was credited with the victory.
Marc Krantz, Payne and Noland Ingold each singled twice and doubled to lead the Van Horn attack. A throwing error led to Van Horn’s two winning runs in the top of the eighth.
“Overall, we played pretty good,” said Van Horn coach Tim Wilson.
SCA, last season’s state Class 2 runner-up, defeated Barstow 8-0 in the finals.
St. Mary’s (5-7) followed the Van Horn loss with 15-0 and 14-0 victories over Imagine Renaissance Academy and Maranatha Academy to nab fifth place.
Danny Fedynich pitched a three-hit shutout and Drew Huttinger singled twice with five RBIs and Sam Kenney singled and doubled with two RBIs.
Huttinger allowed only three hits and struck out four in pitching the five-inning victory over Maranatha.
Scott Lehane doubled three times with two RBIs to lead a potent St. Mary’s attack. Bobby Brock singled, doubled and tripled with three RBIs and Jason Lynch singed twice and doubled with two RBIs. Each regular in the St. Mary’s lineup had at least two hits.
