The William Chrisman football team gave defending state Class 5 champion Staley a battle for one half.
Then came the second half. The Falcons erupted for five third-quarter touchdowns and went on to a 56-28 victory over the Bears in the Suburban Middle Seven opener Friday night at Independence All-School Stadium/Norm James Field.
The Bears fell to 0-3 with their 15th consecutive loss.
The Staley defense held the Bears to 70 yards rushing on 32 attempts. Junior quarterback Dylan Cole completed 9 of 16 passes for 136 yards and one touchdown to lead the Bears.
Alex Ball hauled in a 21-yard pass from Cole for Chrisman’s first touchdown. Cole passed 32 yards to DeJay and 5 yards to Brett Wolf for the other first-half Chrisman touchdowns. Gannon Ogle plunged 1 yard for the Bears’ final score in the fourth quarter. Ben Gilliland kicked four extra points for the Bears, who play at Raytown next week.
GRAIN VALLEY 16, WARRENSBURG 6: This time a close game went to Grain Valley.
Two touchdowns and a field goal were enough for the host Eagles to hold off Warrensburg for a 16-6 home victory Friday. Grain Valley had fallen to Savannah 13-6 and St. Joseph Benton 13-12 in its opening two games.
Brendon Baldwin scored on a 17-yard run, giving the Eagles a 6-0 lead midway in the first quarter. Evan Velasquez kicked the first of two extra points.
Travis Delozier’s 3-yard run with 29 seconds remaining in the first half gave Grain Valley a 14-0 lead.
Velasquez added a 27-yard field goal with 7:09 remaining in the third quarter.
Warrensburg’s only touchdown came on Logan Means’ 6-yard run with 10:18 remaining.
The Grain Valley defense held Warrensburg to 173 total yards. Grain Valley rolled up 318, including 193 rushing.
Bryce Quinn led the Eagles with 60 yards on six carries. Ben Andes completed 9 of 17 passed for 125 yards.
“We are still struggling on offense but we did some things better,” Grain Valley coach Jimmy Tucker said. “It was great to get the first win. Quinn had a nice game.”

LIBERTY 52, LEE’S SUMMIT NORTH 9: Visiting Liberty rolled to a 26-7 halftime and went on to rout the Broncos in both teams’ Suburban Big Six opener.
Matthew Zombo rushed for 232 yards on just 10 carries and scored three touchdowns to power the Blue Jays (2-1, 1-0). David Graves added 160 yards on 25 carries.

The Broncos’ other two points came on a safety when Jordan Smith tackled Devon Bryant in the Liberty end zone.
OTHER SCORES: In other area games Friday night, Oak Grove (3-0) defeated Nevada 40-20; Lee’s Summit (2-1) downed Park Hill 46-24; Lee’s Summit West (3-0) rolled to a 42-14 win over St. Joseph Central; Raytown South (1-2) upended Kearney 29-26 for its first win; and Raytown (0-3) was edged 21-19 by North Kansas City.
