The big uglies helped Blue Springs High School earn a beautiful 38-24 win Friday night at Rockhurst High School, as coach Kelly Donohoe’s Wildcats continue to be the showcase team in Eastern Jackson County.
DaShaughn Terry opened the game with a 59-yard score, Dalvin Warmack added three more touchdowns and the Class 6 No. 2-ranked Wildcats finished with 254 yards on the ground on just 31 attempts.
“We wanted to jump on them early, and we did,” Donohoe said, “because of the line. We dominated Rockhurst on the line and not many teams can do that. Our offensive line was just great tonight.”
Warmack and Terry backed that statement.
“Our first touchdown was just like we wrote it up in the playbook,” said Terry, who also had a game-breaking interception late in the third period. “I got the ball and the hole was so big I couldn’t believe it. Whoever got the ball on that play was going to score.”
Warmack, who finished with 20 carries for 163 yards and touchdown runs of 18, 24 and 11 yards, agreed.
“When I scored on the fourth-and-1 carry, there was no one in front of me,” Warmack said, referring to the 24-yard touchdown. “The hole was so big a truck could have driven through it. I know that’s a cliché, but that’s how big the hole was. The line deserves all the credit tonight.”
Senior offensive lineman John Keltner said the line has equal respect for the guys in the backfield.
“We’re not a team, we’re a family,” Keltner said. “With D’ (Terry) and Dalvin back there, you know if you make a good block they can go all the way. Wylson (Lamb) does a great job at quarterback and all the guys on the line work hard.
“We’re 3-0 for a reason. We worked so hard in the offseason and all summer. We remember what it felt like to lose to Rockhurst last year, then to beat Blue Springs South in district, but not make the playoffs.
“That leaves a bad taste in your mouth. No one wants that taste anymore, and we’re doing everything we can to make sure it doesn’t happen again this season.”
Blue Springs scored 21 points in the second quarter to blow the game open and take a 31-10 lead into the locker room.
The biggest TD of the night came on a 61-yard kickoff return by Darrius Shepherd, the son of former Wildcat star Lou Sherpherd, with just 1:20 left in the second period (see sidebar).

While the offense continues to roll up the points, the defense had some fun Friday night too.
Terry ended the fifth-ranked Hawklets’ scoring march deep in Blue Springs territory when he picked off Trey Vickers in the third period.
“There were a lot of big plays in the game,” Donohoe said, “but that might have been the biggest. If they score in the third period, who knows what happens.”
In the fourth period, Elijah Lee and Derick Clement sacked Vickers on back-to-back plays for a combined total loss of 24 yards.
“I just moved to Blue Springs from St. Joseph, and it’s great to be a team with this kind of offense and defense,” said Lee, a transfer from St. Joseph Central. “We can be even better than we are right now. We’re learning every game. Tonight was just a great night. I know how much the guys wanted to beat Rockhurst, it was all they were talking about.”
The loss dropped Rockhurst to 1-2. Blue Springs hosts Class 5 No. 2 Lee’s Summit West (3-0) next Friday.
