Columbia, MO —
Roughly 15 hours after suffering a frustrating and disheartening defeat to Columbia Rock Bridge in the Class 5 state semifinals, the Blue Springs girls basketball team made sure it closed its season in an appropriate fashion.
The fourth-ranked Wildcats dominated Cor Jesu Academy from start to finish in Saturday’s third-place game at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, holding the Chargers scoreless in the third quarter and without a field goal for nearly 15 minutes in a 45-13 triumph.
“We didn’t have any game plan,” Blue Springs coach Mark Spigarelli said. “We didn’t have any film, we didn’t even have matchups. We just told them to match up on court. Third-place game, we were relying on our four seniors to carry us through that.”
Those four seniors – Lizzy Wendell, Karyla Middlebrook, Tyra Bickham and Tara Sheehy – added one more win to an astounding 115-15 career record.
“It was definitely tough,” Middlebrook said, “because we wanted to be in the championship game so badly. But I mean, we wanted to end our season with a win, so we had to come out and play.”
Wendell paced Blue Springs (29-3) with game-highs in points (15), rebounds (10) and steals (eight). Middlebrook finished with seven points and four assists and freshman Symphony Davis came off the bench to splash a pair of fourth-quarter 3-pointers.
Laura Milles led Cor Jesu (21-11) with three points.
