“She played really, really well,” Williams said after the junior scored a career-high 23 points to go along with eight steals and seven rebounds in a 64-59 Suburban Middle Seven victory over visiting Raytown Thursday night.
“I am thankful I have her. She did a good job driving the ball in the paint against their zone.”
The Indians (13-9, 5-5 Middle Seven) had lost nine consecutive times to the Blue Jays. The previous victory over Raytown, a 52-37 decision, came on Jan. 24, 2007.
Paige Bunn, Raven’s younger sister, added 16 points for Fort Osage, which overcame a 26-22 Raytown halftime lead.
GRAIN VALLEY 50, HARRISONVILLE 36: Grain Valley kept its Missouri River Valley Conference West title hopes alive with the victory at Harrisonville.
Sophomores Aerreon Parker and Courtney Sibert led the Eagles (16-8, 7-2) with 12 and nine points, respectively. Chandler Huttinger added eight points to the balanced attack.
“The kids played well,” Grain Valley coach Randy Draper said. “We had a great practice Wednesday and it carried over into tonight. Two sophomores led us in scoring. That was awesome.”
LIBERTY 47, BLUE SPRINGS SOUTH 39: Host Blue Springs South failed to hold a 19-18 halftime lead in suffering the Suburban Big Six loss.
South fell to 10-12 and 2-6.
VAN HORN 38, KC EAST 9: Elizabeth Leroy’s 12 points led eight scorers as Van Horn easily defeated host Kansas City East Thursday night.
Van Horn (6-16) coasted after outscoring the Bears 12-0 in the opening quarter. The Falcons were in charge 18-6 at halftime.
“It was a nice win going into our little break,” Van Horn coach Julie Crowell said. “I was very proud of the girls and was able to get all of them some playing time. We are looking forward to finishing the season strong and districts starting week after next.”
OAK GROVE 45, EXCELSIOR SPRINGS 36: The Panthers (7-15, 2-7) held off host Excelsior Springs for a Missouri River Valley Conference West victory Thursday night that snapped a four-game losing streak.
BOYS
A three-game winning streak came to a tough end for the Van Horn boys basketball team.
The Falcons couldn’t hold a one-point lead in the closing seconds in suffering at 54-50 defeat to host Oak Grove Thursday night.
Robert Bluett tallied 19 points, Anthony Winningham added 16 and DiMico Hawkins had nine to pace the Falcons (9-14).
Cole Doherty fired in 16 points and Derrick Dow contributed 15 to spark Oak Grove (16-6).
“We got off a to a slow start, got back in it and had a chance to win it at the end,” Van Horn coach Daniel Bieser said.
Oak Grove jumped to a 22-16 halftime lead.
