The Missouri Mavericks will open their fourth Central Hockey League season Oct. 19 in Denver, against the expansion Cutthroats.
The Mavericks, who announced their 2012-13 schedule Thursday, will open their home campaign Saturday, Nov. 3 against rival Wichita at the Independence Events Center. The home schedule includes 27 weekend games. All non-Sunday game will begin at 7:05 p.m.
“Once you see the schedule,” Mavericks coach Scott Hillman said, “it all seems real, and we can’t wait.
“The last 48 hours have been a whirlwind, and so much fun,” Hillman added. “You get to look at the schedule, see where we start the season – with five games on the road – and hope we can duplicate the success we enjoyed last year and hopefully can find a way to avoid the lack of success we had once we returned home.”
The Mavericks started last season with a 6-0 road mark but struggled at home early in the season, getting off to a disappointing 2-7-1 record at the Events Center.
“Simon (Watson, assistant director of hockey operations) and I will be at the rink every day from here on out, getting ready for what we believe is going to be an exciting season.”
The Mavericks will face off against the Quad City Mallards more than any other team this season, a total of 13 times. Wichita and Bloomington are the next most common opponents as the Mavs will face each of them 10 times apiece. Every team in the CHL will visit Independence Events Center and Missouri will travel to every city in the league as well.
“We’re going to maintain that great rivalry with Wichita and begin a rivalry with Quad City and Bloomington,” the coach said, “which really began last season. I think it’s great when you have those rivalry games where everyone in the arena is excited about coming out and watching a game against a really big rival. If we can develop some more rivalries like the one we have against Wichita, that would just be outstanding.”
The new team in St. Charles, Mo., won’t begin operations until next season.
Missouri will begin the season with the longest road trip at five games when they travel to Denver, Arizona and Wichita before the home opener on Nov. 3. The Mavericks’ longest home stand is five games and it starts on New Year’s Eve when the team hosts the Tulsa Oilers and ends on Jan. 12 against the Quad City Mallards.
