The Missouri Mavericks will play a preseason game after all.

The Mavericks announced Tuesday that they will play the Bloomington Blaze in an exhibition game at 7 p.m. Friday at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, Ill., so coach Scott Hillman can get a closer look at his team under game situations.

The game will not be broadcast.

“We were not anticipating playing an exhibition game this year,” president and general manager Brent Thiessen said. “However, when the opportunity presented itself we felt we wanted to take advantage and see how some of the players in camp will respond. We look forward to the quick trip to Bloomington and it should help answer some the roster questions we have.”

The Mavericks, who opened training camp Monday, now have 24 players on their preseason roster, including 14 forwards, six defensemen and four goaltenders.

“Every player on this roster will play in the CHL this season,” Hillman said. “Unfortunately, because of the numbers game, they won’t all be playing here in Independence. With 14 forwards and the four goaltenders, we need to see how they respond in a game situation. Our numbers are higher than we anticipated because of the addition of American Hockey League players, and we want to give everyone the chance to prove what they can do out on the ice.”

The Mavericks begin their fourth season Oct. 19 on the road against the expansion Denver Cutthroats. After a five-game road trip to Denver, Arizona and Wichita to start the season, the Mavericks’ first home game is Nov. 3 against the Wichita Thunder at Independence Events Center.
