The Missouri Mavericks nearly got their first win in franchise history Saturday night.
But a comeback fell one goal short in a 3-2 loss to the host Amarillo Gorillas at the Amarillo Civic Center.
The Mavericks scored a pair of goals in the second period goals to cut a 3-0 deficit to one goal, but they couldn’t get the tying score and fell to 0-4-0.
“We just have to find a way to win,” Mavericks head coach Scott Hillman said. “It seems like a broken record. The effort is there; we just need to eliminate mistakes and capitalize on our opportunities.”
Joe Guenther scored a pair of goals and Anthony Battaglia scored what proved to be the game-winner to give Amarillo (5-1-0) the 3-0 lead.
Bill Vandermeer converted a penalty shot at the 10:10 mark of the second, and Andrew Davis cut the deficit to one a minute later on assists from Tyler Fleck and Chad Hinz.
But the Mavericks, for the second straight game, failed to convert on any power-play chances – this time four – and couldn’t get the equalizer in a scoreless third period.
Goalie Mike Gorman stopped 24 of 27 shots but suffered his second loss.
The Mavericks travel to Odessa, Texas, tonight to meet the Jackalopes at 7:05. It’s the fifth game of a season-opening nine-game road trip for the Mavericks, whose home opener is Nov. 13 against Wichita.
