For a team that came into its Class 3 District 15 volleyball match against Odessa at Excelsior Springs with just two wins on the season, the Oak Grove Panthers surely didn’t play like it.
The sixth-seed Panthers upset third-seeded Odessa 25-19, 25-23 to advance to Wednesday’s semifinal round against second-seeded host Excelsior Springs.
After winning the first game, the Panthers were down 20-9 in the second game before mounting a huge comeback.
“It was a great win,” Oak Grove head coach Amber Evans said. “The girls went into that game with the attitude that they could win. I think it was the first time all season that they believed that they could win and I like it.”
Oak Grove, now 3-22-2 on the season, were led by Niki Baxter’s 14 assists and Arian Williams’ 12 digs.
BARSTOW 25-25, VAN HORN 14-16: Van Horn’s season came to a halt Monday at the Class 2 District 15 Tournament at Lee’s Summit Community Christian School.
The two-set loss was a bitter pill to swallow for Falcons head coach Cristin Nowak.
“It was a mess,” Nowak said after her team finished 15-8. “We had a lack of communication. We were constantly scrambling around. We were making it difficult to win. We just couldn’t make it click tonight.”
“We were all disappointed,” Nowak said, “but we had a successful season.”
LEE’S SUMMIT NORTH 25-25, GRANDVIEW 0-8: The Broncos used a perfect opening game to dispatch of Grandview in two sets in the Class 4 District 13 Tournament at Lee’s Summit North.
“I thought we played well,” Lee’s Summit North head coach Rhea Moses said. “We served well and we played defense pretty good.”
Next up for Lee’s Summit North is today’s 5:30 p.m. semifinal match with Notre Dame de Sion, which upset favored Lee’s Summit 26-24, 21-25, 25-19 on Monday.
“We’re looking forward to playing them,” Moses said of the Storm.
Lee’s Summit finished 17-15-1 with the loss to Notre Dame de Sion.
Raymore-Peculiar beat Belton in two games in the other first-round match. The Panthers advance to meet top-seeded Lee’s Summit West (29-3) in the other semifinal at 7 p.m. today.
