The Lee’s Summit North boys soccer team’s dream season is over.
After upending two-time defending Class 3 state champion Rockhurst in sectional play, the Broncos were ousted 4-1 by Park Hill in Saturday’s state quarterfinal. The loss left the Broncos one step short of their first state semifinal berth.
The Broncos went up 1-0 on Michael Oakley’s goal in the 11th minute, but from there, it was all Park Hill as the Trojans tallied the last four goals of Saturday’s quarterfinal matchup at the North Kansas City School District Activities Complex at Staley High School.
“We didn’t turn in our best performance, but Park Hill deserves a lot of credit for playing with a lot of energy,” Broncos head coach Tim Richardson said.
The loss ended Lee’s Summit North’s season at 17-7-1. It was a season that saw the Broncos tie Lee’s Summit for first place in the Suburban Big Seven, defeat Blue Springs for the Class 3 District 14 championship and end Rockhurst’s 13-year reign as the Kansas City area’s representative at the state championship tournament.
“I think it would have been difficult to project us to do the things that we accomplish this season,” Richardson said. “We tied for first in our conference, won our district and we beat Rockhurst. This team worked really hard and as coaches we are really proud of them.”
