Five weeks down, four regular-season weeks to go in Missouri High School football before the start of district play.
So, what teams are in the driver’s seat to gain the No. 1 seeds? Let’s review those districts involving area teams.
Class 6 District 4: Blue Springs (4-1) is the leader with 46 points followed by Raymore-Peculiar. Blue Springs South is fourth, Lee’s Summit seventh and Lee’s Summit North eighth.
If the playoffs opened today, Blue Springs faces North in the first round of the playoffs. South takes on No. 5 Rockhurst.
Class 5 District 6: Undefeated Lee’s Summit West is the solid leader with 52.8 points over No. 2 Springfield Parkview (45.05).
Class 5 District 7: Fort Osage, also 5-0, leads the six-team district with 48.1 points. Truman is fifth (17.3) and William Chrisman sixth (13.5). The district also includes No. 2 Winnetonka (4-1) and No. 3 North Kansas City (4-1).
Class 4 District 7: Grain Valley (2-3) is sixth with 29 points. Harrisonville (4-1), the Eagles’ opponent this week, is the leader. Raytown South (2-3) is third, meaning Grain Valley would play Raytown South if the playoffs started now. Five of the eight teams have a losing record.
Class 4 District 8: This is shaping up as one of the toughest districts in the state. Six teams have a winning record headed by Savannah’s 5-0 and three 4-1 squads in Platte County, Excelsior Springs and St. Joseph Lafayette.
Despite a winning 3-2 record, Van Horn is sixth and Liberty North, state-ranked in the preseason is seventh.
Class 3 District 7: Unbeaten Oak Grove leads followed by 5-0 Hogan Prep. It’s another tough district with six of the teams sporting a winning record.
Class 1 District 7: St. Mary’s (1-4) is fourth in a very weak district. Only Wellington-Napoleon (4-1) and West Platte (3-2) have winning records.
The Trojans could move up because winnable games with Maranatha Academy and the Summit Christian Academy junior varsity remain.
As of now, the Trojans would play in the first round against Lone Jack, which is coached by former St. Mary’s head coach Jason Fenstermaker.
