Bill Althaus: New Moon rising for new-look Jags

The name Moon carries a lot of weight at Blue Springs South High School.

Mike Moon is a longtime assistant coach on Greg Oder’s Class 6 state championship squad and his son, Logan, was a standout football and baseball player for the Jaguars.

A new Moon was rising Friday night at Larry Stewart Memorial Stadium where the Jaguars downed Truman 47-14 to start the 2012 season with a big win over a dramatically improved Truman squad.

While the Patriots were driving early in the game, Jordan Moon picked up a fumble and returned it for a 65-yard touchdown to set the defensive tone for a team that is known for its hard-nosed defensive style of play.

“Give all the credit on that play to Kris Butts for making the tackle that forced the fumble and our coaches for having us in the right position,” Logan Moon said. “It’s great to play a part in a win – especially our first win – but this was a team win. No one played more of a role than anyone else.”

That type of philosophy helps teams win state championships.

Last year, the Jaguars started the season with one returning starter on offense. This year, they return three starters – all on the offensive line – but Friday night, they looked like a seasoned group of vets who were ready to make a successful run at another state crown.

“I thought we played a lot better in the second half,” Oder said. “It took a while for the guys to get going, but there are still a lot of things we need to work on.”

The offense struggled a bit in the first half, but finished with 397 yards on the ground with Khorey Kilgore carrying the ball 13 times for 157 yards and three touchdowns (he added a fourth on a 40-yard screen pass).

“It feels good to have Khorey and Trey (Irvin) in the backfield,” said first-year quarterback Dalton Brewer. “And the line was great tonight – but we always have a great line because of our coaches. They have us ready for anything.

“We didn’t really know what Truman was going throw at us, and it took us about a half to really get going.”

And once they did, they were unstoppable.

“They’re such a good team,” an appreciative Truman coach Jeff Floyd said. “They are well coached and have great talent. That’s a hard combination to beat.”

It’s just one game, but it gives a group of understudies the chance to enjoy some success and see what it’s like playing in the glare of the spotlight.

“I’m glad the first one is out of the way and we won,” Kilgore said. “This win will give us a lot of confidence heading into the rest of the season.”
