Remember the spring of 2012 in Missouri.
After a rain-soaked opening week of spring sports, the weather turned mild and dry.
As a result, for what is believed to be the first time ever, all scheduled Suburban Conference baseball games were played.
The other spring sports also benefited from the unusual weather.
Athletic directors saved hours of time and numerous telephone calls by not having to reschedule rained-out events.
Liberty and Lee’s Summit West both played at least 30 baseball games. Many other schools played at least 25. For Missouri in the spring, those are unusual numbers.
n The high school track and field season is over. There was only one change on The Examiner’s boys all-time area honor roll. Lee’s Summit West’s Evan Boehm moved into third place in the discus with a school record-breaking throw of 188 feet, 7 inches.
Such wasn’t the case for the girls.
Fort Osage’s Asia Cole and Lee’s Summit West’s Brittany Kallenberger were responsible for two changes.
Cole moved into the third place in the shot put and fourth in the discus with school record-breaking throws of 46-1 and 150-1, respectively.
Kallenberger took over first place in the pole vault by clearing 12-10, a mark that may be difficult to break. She moved into a five-way tie for third place in the high jump at 5-8.
Blue Springs’ Megan Wright, in her last high school event, cleared 12 feet in the pole vault in the state meet to join two others for second place.
Blue Springs South standout Samantha Nightingale took over fourth place in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4 minutes, 56.06 seconds.
Lee’s Summit North’s Remy Abrought set an all-time mark of 14.24 in the 100 meter high hurdles. She broke the time of 14.30 set by Oak Grove’s Michele Cervant in 1986.
Finally, Lee’s Summit North took over first place and Lee’s Summit West claimed third with 1,600 relay times of 3:55.94 and 3:56.82, respectively.
n Kristy Giuffey has been named the new head girls basketball coach at Lee’s Summit West. She formerly coached at Kansas City’s Notre Dame de Sion and Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College and was a recruiting coordinator at Wichita State University and Missouri State University.
Also, assistant Sherry Butts is the new girls basketball coach at Staley and Megan Laws has been named the new volleyball coach at Kearney. Her husband, Kellen, helps coach the Blue Springs South wrestling team. Todd Magwire, who coached O’Hara to the Class 4 state title in 2005, is the new boys basketball coach at Winnetonka.
Finally, summer camps in many sports are under way. The first day of fall sports practice is Aug. 6. The first football games are Aug. 24.
