The 2012 area American Legion season kicks off in late May.
And there will be some changes.
After fielding a team for many years, Raytown Post 596 has folded. So has Excelsior Springs Post 136. But Higginsville will again field a team.
Former Truman and Independence Post 21 standout Barney White has replaced Mike Kline as the manager of Hi-Boy Drive In/Post 340.
Klein instead will manage the Hi-Boy junior legion team. Independence VFW Post 1000 also will sponsor a junior team.
Oak Grove Post 379 also has a new manager in Kerry Shaw, who coaches softball and baseball at Odessa High School. He replaces Dave Richards.
All of the other 2011 managers return.
n It will be interesting who fills the many vacant head high school basketball coaching positions at Blue Springs (boys) and Liberty, Lee’s Summit West, Blue Springs South, Lee’s Summit and Staley girls.
Former Truman assistant Melissa Krog resigned at Staley to spend more time with her family.
The head boys and girls coaching jobs at Sedalia Smith-Cotton also are open.
n Lee’s Summit West’s Brittany Kallenberger has set an area best in the pole vault. She cleared 12 feet, 2 inches in the Grandview Invitational. She cleared 12 feet last spring that tied Lee’s Summit’s Abby Garlich for the all-time area best.
n Not that my opinion matters, but I do not like the new state high school football playoff system.
Many teams will lose a money-making home game. Two teams could play each other twice in the opening 10 weeks of the season.
The good thing about the new system is every team in the state will be in the playoffs.
I can’t wait to see the point system the state adopts and the weekly rankings to determine the top eight seeds in each district.
The fun and games, so to speak, begin the weekend of Aug. 24-25. The opening day of practice is Aug. 6.
n Blue Springs South will host the Suburban Big Six track and field championships May 2 and 4. The Middle Six meet will be at Lee’s Summit West. Winnetonka will host the Middle Seven at Staley.
n Raytown and Raytown South are looking for new baseball coaches. Jaime Oyler said this is his last season at Raytown and ditto for Steve Peck at Raytown South.
