Tim Crone: Lots to think about, enjoy during fall sports season

Wow do I ever love the fall!

Baseball is rapidly approaching the playoffs, high school football is three games into the season, college football started up last weekend and the NFL begins its season this weekend. In between all of those games is golf outings – playing golf in Missouri in the fall is about as good as it gets.

n I could not help but reflect about the Penn State situation as I watched the Nittany Lions play for the first time in over four decades without Joe Paterno at the helm.

Obviously, we move forward. It is especially important to move past horrible events. Make them a teachable moment. As the biggest scandal in college football, a lot has been said about the characters involved in this mess. As you watch the sold out crowd of young students and old alumni cheer on their team, you can’t help but wonder if the situation actually did provide a teachable moment. Did it in fact teach all of those great fans perspective and balance in college sports.

The university will pay dearly for lost perspectives, for the poor decisions made by their leaders, and for the nightmare that resulted. I hope that all institutions throughout the country have learned the lesson that although winning is important, character and integrity will ALWAYS out trump winning.

Wins and losses create an easy measuring stick for sports, but right and wrong will still prevail as the true standard to guide us all in the pursuits life offers. A wrong turn on the road to success can occur, but it should never compromise character and integrity. It is a lesson that became front and center with Penn State.

The program and its leaders should have gone down in history at the top of the heap and instead ended in rubble. Now is the time to move forward, to work hard and commit to excellence. Let the fear of loss of perspective provide a beacon of light along the path!

n The Chiefs need to get another corner or the young corners need to grow up quick.

n The starting pitchers for the Royals have shaped up in the last three weeks. Do not let that fool you. We need a legitimate one and two starter.

n The Georgia game at Mizzou should provide Tiger fans a measuring  stick.

n My quote this week is from 26th US President, Theodore Roosevelt,  “I care not what others think of what I do, but I care very much about what I think of what I do. That is CHARACTER!”
