Billy Butler of the Kansas City Royals has been selected as the winner of the 2012 Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award.

Butler received 80 of the 84 first-place votes in balloting by club beat writers, broadcasters and AL public relations departments announced Tuesday, beating Toronto's Edwin Encarnacion. It's the first time in his six-year career that Butler has been chosen as the American League's top DH.

The 26-year-old first-time All-Star batted .313 with 32 doubles, 29 homers and 107 RBIs last season. He is the first Royals player since Carlos Beltran in 2003 to hit .300 with at least 25 homers and 100 RBIs.

Three-time winner Hal McRae (1976, 1980 and 1982) was the previous Kansas City player to earn the award.
