The Grain Valley boys basketball team just ran out of time.
On Friday, the Eagles traveled to California and left with a tough 60-59 defeat despite battling back from an eight-point deficit at the end of the third.
Daniel Mahurin knocked down a 3-pointer in the closing seconds to bring Grain Valley within a point, but there were less than five seconds left and the Eagles (1-6) had used all their timeouts so California was able to run out the clock without inbounding the ball.
Grain Valley fell behind 16-6 at the end of the first quarter and trailed 42-34 going into the fourth before rallying.
Cody Zeigler paced the Eagles with 18 points while Mahurin finished with 16 and Hunter Ramirez added 11.
“I was really proud of our effort, in the second half especially,” Eagles coach Andy Herbert said. “We dug ourselves a hole, but we responded well in the second half. We’ve just got to put a whole game together.”
