Leo Gibson’s hat trick couldn’t help the Missouri Comets dodge heartbreak Saturday as the Comets fell to the rival Wings 12-11 on the road.
The Comets started strong, outshooting Wichita 12-5 in the first period as Gibson netted his first score with four seconds left in the period.
The Wings regrouped in the second quarter as Kevin Ten Eyck and Frederico Moojen each scored to take the lead five minutes in. Seven minutes later, Edvin Worley shoved another score across to put Wichita up 6-2. A minute later, Gibson brought the Comets to within 6-4 off an assist from John Sosa.
Just 15 seconds into the third, Sosa hit Gibson for another score to tie the score. The Wings retook the lead shortly after, but Vahid Assadpour gave Missouri its second lead of the night with a goal that put the Comets up 9-8 with eight minutes left in the period.
That didn’t last long as Andre Berenzon scored before the end of the quarter to put the Wings up 10-9 going into the final period.
Victor Quiroz opened the fourth-quarter scoring for the Wings with a score to put them up 12-9. With time running out, forward Ramone Palmer scored a key goal to pull the Comets to within 12-11. But with 10 seconds remaining, Ten Eyck threw himself in front of the Comets’ final shot attempt to preserve the victory and drop Missouri to 12-11 on the season.
