The William Chrisman wrestling team conjured up the exact mentality coach Mick Cronk was looking for in the team’s dual Monday night at St. Joseph Central. And it boosted the Bears to a 54-25 triumph.
Chrisman left with nine victories, all via pin. Winners were: Larry Danforth (113 pounds), Derek Williams (120), Andrew Bennett (126), Louis West (138), Deontae Lapsley (145), Matt Whitworth (170), Taylor Blann (182), Chris Sheets (195) and Danny Klick (220).
“I think the guys game out and handled the elements well,” Cronk said. “They came out attacking and being aggressive.”
LYDIA LIGHTS TOURNAMENT: Even if Blue Springs South wrestling coach Doug Black felt like there were a few wins left on the table, he left Saturday’s fourth annual Lydia Lights Tournament at Blue Springs South High School fairly pleased.
The Jaguars ended with 359 points to capture a third-place finish. Waynesville racked up 550 points to claim the team title ahead of second-place Lebanon (371).
South was boosted by division-winners Ausin Eads (152 pounds), who finished 8-0 with seven pins, Cole Foley (132, 6-0) and Christian Boyles (195, 5-1).
“We had a great final round where we had an 8-2 record,” Black said, “but we still left an ugly taste in the mouth as we lost two winnable matches in the finals.”
Kyla Montalto finished 6-1 to post a second-place finish in the 120-pound bracket and Zac Storey went 5-2 to come in second at 160.
“Overall, our kids came out and battled and competed hard,” Black said. “And as a coach, you can’t ask for more than that.”
