For the first time, Grain Valley is sending a doubles team to the Class 1 state girls tennis tournament.
Nathalia Barr and Mariah Hernandez defeated Barstow 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in sectional play Monday at Odessa High School.
“We have sent a singles player but never a doubles team to the state tournament,” Grain Valley coach Randy Draper said.
The state tournament is set for Oct. 19-20 at Springfield.
“It was tough route to the state tournament,” Draper said. “They lost the first set and were down 3-2 in the second. Then they got aggressive and turned the match around.”
Barr and Hernandez take a 19-4 record to Springfield.
The duo went 3-0 and defeated teammates Jessica Dornes and Darby Scharfenkamp 6-0, 6-0 in the district finals Saturday at Odessa. Both teams qualified for sectional play.
Dornes and Scharfenkamp, however, fell to Barstow 6-0, 6-0 Monday.
In singles play Saturday, Grain Valley’s Hannah Wiechmann defeated teammate Chelsey Gabriel in the third-place match, 6-3, 6-1.
CLASS 2 DISTRICT 14: The Blue Springs South doubles squad of Madison McCulloch and Remy Davenport is one step away from the state tournament.
McCulloch and Davenport teamed for a second-place finish in Friday’s District 14 doubles tournament. Their only loss was a 6-2, 6-0 defeat to Lee’s Summit North’s Logan Morrissey and Camryn Parnell. Isabella Bowling and Liia Butler finished third in the tourney, losing to Morrissey and Parnell 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals.
In the singles tournament, William Chrimsan’s Jacqueline Temperilli rolled to a championship, downing Lee’s Summit North’s Jenny Krause 6-0, 7-5 in the title match.
All top two finishers advanced to today’s individual sectional at 4 p.m. at Santa Fe Trail Park.
