The Van Horn soccer team defeated Savannah 2-0 Tuesday. Two first-half goals stood up for the Van Horn victory in the season and Winnetonka Tournament opener at Staley.

Roland Mejia and Kevin Alessio each scored a goal on a Richardo Sanchez assist. Keeper Kyle Davis recorded nine saves for the shutout.

“It was  a good way to start,” Van Horn coach Chris Corrie said. “It was a hot game for fitness and ware. We created a lot of chances but didn’t finish them.”

Van Horn faces the host team at 6:45 tonight in the second game in the four-school, round-robin tournament.

SMITHVILLE 4, TRUMAN 0: The Patriots fell to 0-2 on the season with its second loss in the Liberty Tournament.

“We played with no sense of urgency and let Smithville get behind us repeatedly,” first-year Truman head coach Jared Byrne said. “Offensively we never fully took advantage of the space we were given to play with. We will have to come out stronger and more focused if we expect to be successful. We did have a few injuries and the heat worked against us but overall we have to improve.”

O’HARA 3, WILLIAM CHRISMAN 1: An improved performance didn’t prevent William Chrisman from its second loss in the Lee’s Summit West Tournament.

O’Hara struck for three goals in the opening minutes for the victory.

Trent Sifuentes scored the only Chrisman goal in the 60th minute.

“The first 20 minutes were a little rough for us,” Chrisman coach John Straub said. “But after that point the boys played much better, giving up only two shots in the final 60 minutes.”

OAK GROVE 2, BOONVILLE 0: Zach Leamon and Pedro Ramirez worked together to get the Panters a 2-0 win against Boonville on Tuesday.

Leamon put the Oak Grove on the board with a goal in the 25th minute with an assist from Ramirez.

Ramirez added the second goal of the game in the 47th minute with an assist from Leamon.

“It was the first game of the season,” coach Ben Thomason said. “The boys looked flat and slow.

“It was good to get the first win. It’s something to build on. I wish it looked prettier.”
