8:38 p.m. -- Jace Banner fell short in his chance to win a state championship.
The Van Horn 215-pounder was a victim of stalling calls, falling in the state title match in Class 1.
Banner was trying to ride out Ross Bain of Lexington and got hit twice in 10 seconds on stalling calls in the second overtime, and fell 3-2.
This isn’t the first time I’ve seen stalling calls decide a match. I just wish the calls would have gone both ways, as Banner at least tried to take shots in the match. Bain just stood there and danced around and seemed to have no offense. Banner was the only one really close to a takedown, but was unable to drag his toes at the end of the first period or he would have had two points and the match wouldn’t have gone to overtime.
It was a good season for Banner, and hopefully he can return to the state championship match next year and win it.
