2:37 p.m. -- Well, team scores are finally out and Oak Grove is sitting in good shape for a trophy.
In fact, the Panthers have probably clinched at least fourth place. The key will be whether they can hold off Excelsior Springs, which has two finalists to Oak Grove’s one.
Here are the Class 2 standings heading into the finals
1. Kirksville 136
2. Monett 107
3. Oak Grove 102
4. Excelsior Springs 97.5
5. (tie) St. Joseph Benton and Platte County.
Second place would be a little tough, since Monett has three favored wrestlers in the state finals, including a guy in Kyle Meyer at 152 going for his fourth straight state title. Also, Kellen Bounous at 145 is going for his third straight title.
In Class 4, Park Hill has all but wrapped up the title.
The Trojans are 17.5 points up on Fort Zumwalt West and have five finalists, at least two of them are decent favorites.
They do match up twice with Fort Zumwalt West - at 103 and 189. If Zumwalt wins those matches, the Jaguars have a shot. But if Skyler Wood of Park Hill wins at 103, it’s pretty much done.
Here are the team standings.
1. Park Hill 138.5
2. Fort Zumwalt West 121
3. Blue Springs 115
4. Wentzville-Holt 107
5. Francis Howell Central 103
Blue Springs appares to have clinched a trophy. But the Wildcats can clinch third - and possibly second - with a good finals round. The Wildcats get Fort Zumwalt twice in the finals - at 125 and 140. Those wins will be huge toward them trying to get past Zumwalt.
Finals start in two hours. I’ll update throughout the finals to let people know what’s going on.
