Zach Stark’s three touchdowns helped the Lee’s Summit football team (3-6, 1-1) claim a 31-16 decision over Joplin (4-5, 0-2) in a Class 6 District 7 game at Lee’s Summit.
The win for the Tigers was the second in six meetings against the Eagles and kept Lee’s Summit’s hopes alive of qualifying for the state playoffs.
A win over archrival Lee’s Summit North, a 46-14 loser Friday night to Rockhurst, will propel the Tigers into postseason play for the first time since 1987.
North will be attempting to qualify for the playoffs for the second year in a row after advancing last season for a first time in school history.
Stark, meanwhile, started the scoring for the Tigers by breaking loose on a 20-yard in the first quarter. He also scored on a 36-yard burst in the second quarter and added a 21-yard spurt in the final quarter.
Corbin Berkstresser scored the remaining Tiger TD on a 2-yard dive.
Kyle Gross accounted for the remaining Lee’s Summit points by booting a 30-yard field and kicking four extra points.
ROCKHURST 46, LEE’S SUMMIT NORTH 14: The Hawklets (7-2, 2-0) rolled to an early 33-0 halftime lead to capture a Class 6 District 7 win over the Broncos (3-6, 1-1) at North.
The triumph kept Rockhurst’s record against the Broncos at 12-0. The Hawklets also won their fifth game in a row.
Sal Belfonte led the Rockhurst scoring by breaking loose on 57 and 80-yard runs.
Interestlingly, a pair of transfers from Interscholastic League schools scored for each school.
Dexter McDonald, who attended Kansas City Central his freshman year, returned an interception 42 yards for a Hawklet score.
Montereal Robinson scored on a 5-yard scamper.
LAWSON 51, VAN HORN 0: With Clint McGaugh scoring two touchdowns and Zac Mathews adding three, the Cardinals (8-1, 2-0) cruised to a Class 2 District 15 win over the Falcons (0-9, 0-1) at Truman.
The Falcons, losers of 19 in a row over the two seasons, will have a chance to snap their losing streak in the season finale Thursday night against winless Lathrop, an 18-6 loser to Plattsburg, at Lathrop.
McGaugh scored on two and 19-yard runs, while Mathews’ scores came on eight, one and 44-yard bursts.
CLINTON 21, OAK GROVE 15: The Panthers (0-9, 0-2) lost a heartbreaking Class 3 District 13 game to the Cardinals (4-5, 2-0) at Oak Grove.
The win clinched a spot in the state playoffs for Clinton and avenged a 42-0 loss from a year ago to the Panthers.
RAYMORE-PECULIAR 17, LEE’S SUMMIT WEST 14: Offensive lineman Ray German kicked a 32-yard field goal with 14 seconds remaining to lift the Panthers (6-3, 2-0) to a Class 5 District 10 win over the Titans (6-3, 1-1).
The Titans will need a win over Springfield Central to keep their record intact of qualifying for the state playoffs every season since West opened its doors in the fall of 2004.
