Prep girls basketball roundup: Patriots survive double-OT thriller

It was too close for comfort but the Truman girls basketball team claimed its 15th victory in the last 16 games.

Truman was extended through two overtimes before posting a 56-52 victory over visiting Kearney Friday night.

Kearney’s Megan Paul hit a 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining to tie the score 46-46 and force the first overtime. She hit another trey with 10 seconds to go to tie the score 50-50 and send the game into the second overtime.

Abby Hix led the way for Truman by pouring in a career-high 24 points on the strength of four 3-pointers.

“It was a nice win,” Truman coach Steve Cassity said. “We  showed a lot of character. We were down by 12 in the third quarter. The bench got us back into the game.”

Truman (16-4) outscored Kearney (17-4) 14-6 in the fourth quarter.

Kayla Harrell sank three of Truman’s nine 3-pointers on her way to a career-high 13 points.

Paul finished with four of Kearney’s seven treys.

BLUE SPRINGS SOUTH 62, ST. JOSEPH CENTRAL 43: Blue Springs South returned to its winning ways.

Cloe Lane scored 25 points on four 3-pointers, Remy Davenport added 15 and Jordan McNamara had 10 to power the Jaguars to the victory over St. Joseph Central in the third-place game in the Northland Classic at North Kansas City.

“It was nice to come back after the loss on Wednesday,” South coach Fawna Harrison said. “We hit the boards hard and played good defense.”

The outcome was decided when South took a 30-16 halftime lead.

ST. MARY’S 47, MARANATHA ACADEMY 32: Two games and two Crossroads Conference victories for St. Mary’s this week.

Freshman Nina Gavoli had a career-best 16 points and Alexis Sirna added 12 to lead the Trojans to the home triumph over Maranatha.

The defense registered 19 steals to spark the Trojans (4-11, 3-4). Sirna had five steals and four assists and Brittany Sapanero had six steals and five assists.

“We came out very aggressive,” St. Mary’s coach Krista Daniels said. “We played very well as a team. It was a big defensive night for us.”

VAN HORN 37, SUMMIT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 36: Camilla Neumann hit the winning free throw with four-tenths of a second left as Van Horn escaped with the Crossroads Conference victory.

Van Horn (7-8, 4-3) led 19-2 after one quarter.

“We relaxed just enough to let them get back in the game,” Van Horn co-coach Julie Crowell said. “We were extremely lucky to come away with the win but (co-coach Anne Rice) and I are very proud of the girls and how the maintained their composure.”

Brooke Jacobson scored 19 points on four 3-pointers as SCA rallied to tie the score 37-37.

The Falcons have won three of their last four games.

GRAIN VALLEY 49, PEMBROKE HILL 42: Coach Randy Draper was elated.

“It was a big win for us,” he said.

“They have three outside shooters and we gave up one 3-pointer,” Draper said. “I couldn’t be happier. It was fairly close in the last minute and everything was important.”

A balanced Grain Valley attack was led by Lanae Wilke’s 10 points. Five players scored at least five points each.

The Eagles led 25-11 at halftime. Pembroke hill cut the deficit to 32-28 after three quarters. Grain Valley, though, held on to improve to 14-6.
