Lizzy Simonin made sure Lee’s Summit North would not win its fourth straight district title.
The Lee’s Summit senior midfielder scored a pair of first-half goals as the Tigers knocked off North 3-0 in the Class 2 District 13 championship Wednesday night at Lee’s Summit West High School.
“This is huge for the girls,” Tigers coach Dave Wiebenga said. “We hadn’t won a district title since 2004. (North) always has such good teams. They’re always prepared.
“I am so proud of the girls. They have worked and worked and worked and worked. They were ready to take it to North, and that’s what they did.”
Simonin scored off a Megan Stueve assist in the 13th minute to put the Tigers ahead. She scored again four minutes later on a pass from Mandy Laddish.
Stephanie Gorman scored on a Laddish assist in the 32nd minute to give the Tigers a 3-0 halftime lead.
“Lee’s Summit deserves all the credit,” North coach Tim Richardson said. “They put a lot of presure on us. Our possession failed us tonight. They did a great job of marking Morgan (Marlborough). Things just didn’t go our way.”
Lee’s Summit North ended its season at 18-4.
The Tigers (21-1-1) move on to face the Truman-Winnetonka winner in Class 2 sectional play. That game is scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday at Larry Stewart Memorial Stadium at Blue Springs South. Truman meets Winnetonka at 6:30 p.m. today at Northgate Soccer Complex for the District 14 title.
