Welcome back, Austin Holland.
The Blue Springs South senior first baseman has missed 16 games this season after suffering a strained groin and pulled hamstring. But he returned with a vengeance Friday as he collected three hits – including a monster three-run homer – scored two runs and drove home four in a 12-5 Suburban Big Six home win over crosstown rival Blue Springs.
The win gives the Jaguars a 17-5 overall mark and 5-4 conference record while coach Marc Hines’ Wildcats fell to 12-8 and 6-3 at Blue Springs South High School.
The win could have district seeding implications as both Hines and South coach Ben Baier were going to the seeding meeting after the game.
“We didn’t get the big hits and they did,” Hines said. “They’re such a good team, it’s going to be interesting to see what happens in the seeding meeting.”
Baier agreed, adding, “We came out with a lot of intensity and had the big first inning and followed that with Austin’s three-run homer in the second. We still have an outside chance at finishing first in conference (Liberty clinched a share of the title with its 7-4 win over Raymore-Peculiar on Friday), but we’re going to need to beat Ray-Pec next week and get some help from some other schools.”
The Jaguars jumped all over Wildcats starter Jay Corwin in the first inning as Jared Ginter and Gehrig Hudson singled and scored on Colton Pogue’s double. Holland then hit an RBI double and eventually scored on an infield ground out by Taylor Sprague.
Holland gave the Jaguars a 7-0 lead in the second on his long three-run blast to deep left field.
“It feels so good to be back, and to be back hitting the ball,” said Holland, who hit a triple Thursday night at Fort Osage, but also struck out three times. “This is such an important part of the season and I want to contribute.”
One player who is contributing to the Jaguars is leadoff man Ginter, who had two hits, scored three runs and drove home a run.
“Jared’s in the middle of everything offensively,” Baier said. “He’s been getting on base and we’ve been able to get him home most of the time. Tonight, we went into this game with a plan at the plate, and it looked like it.”
Ginter knows his role and feels comfortable in the leadoff position.

“I’m not a power guy or a gap hitter, I just find a way to get one and steal a base and let someone knock me in,” Ginter said. “Our offense has really come around. Today, we got good pitching, hitting and didn’t make an error.”
Matt Olsen allowed one run in four innings to get the win.
Kyle Reed had two hits, scored a run, drove home another run and made a run-saving, diving catch in center field for the Wildcats. James McKinley added two hits and two RBIs.
Hudson and Pogue had two RBIs each for the Jaguars.
