The Fairview Post 10 Knights of Boulder (Colo.) made four errors. And won
Independence Post 21 made only one error. And lost.
But there was another contributing factor to why Post 21 fell 5-4 to the Knights in a National League South Division game in the American Legion Wood Bat Invitational at Crysler Stadium Wednesday. It left 10 runners on base.
Still, a botched ground ball on an attempted fielder’s choice with the bases loaded led to the tying and winning runs for the Knights in the top of the seventh inning.
“The error didn’t cost us the game,” Post 21 manager Tom Bush said. “The play was to first base. We left 10 runners on base, including the bases loaded twice. We didn’t to it with the bats early.”
Left-handed Jake Kissner had allowed only three hits entering the seventh. One was a solo home run by Adam Anderson and the other a two-run blast by Tucker Tharp.
“The curveball was working well,” said Kissner, who struck out eight. “It was one of my better efforts. It was a tough loss – real tough.”
When Peter Sawers singled to open the seventh, Kissner was replaced by Kyle Clifton.
“If the leadoff batter got on base, I was going with Clifton,” Bush said.
The Knights went on to load the bases with one out.
Adam Ollanik’s grounder to second baseman Joe Monaco wasn’t hit sharply enough for a double play, allowing one run to score. Then what proved to be the winning run  scored on the error.
Sawers, who was the starting pitcher and replaced in the fourth, re-entered in the bottom of the seventh and struck out the side to preserve the lead.
The loss ruined a stellar game by Post 21 shortstop Josh Felz. He had three of the five Post 21 hits  and his great defensive play on a ball hit deep in the hole in the top of the fifth inning cost the Knights a run.
Tharp followed with the two-run homer to tie the score. It would have been a three-run shot if not for Felz.
“I am having a good summer,” Felz said. “I feel more comfortable and relaxed at the plate. I like batting leadoff because I get more at-bats.”
William Nesbit was hit by a pitch and later scored on Monaco’s grounder, giving Post 21 a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.
But Post 21 had 21 batters come to the plate over the opening four innings and only three scored.
