It wasn’t perfect, but it was close.
Blue Springs, the No. 1-ranked Class 6 team in the state, scored on its first seven possessions and running back Darrian Miller had 249 yards on 14 carries in the first half to lead the Wildcats to a 48-13 victory over Lee’s Summit West Friday night before a standing-room-only crowd at the Titans’ home field.
“This might be the best first game we’ve played – against a real quality team – since I’ve been here,” said Blue Springs coach Kelly Donohoe, who is entering his 10th season at the helm of the Wildcats.
“We missed an extra point and had some problems with our kickoff coverage, but we can work those things out. I’m just really pleased with how hard the kids worked tonight.
“That’s something we talked about. This is a great environment – a great place to play a high school football game – but it’s a hostile environment and we stayed focused all night long.”
While Miller ran wild, two-time all-state wide receiver Keeston Terry didn’t put up monster numbers, but he was certainly effective every time he touched the ball as he caught touchdown passes of 4 and 5 yards, scored on a 9-yard end around and picked up a fumble at midfield and scored on a 53-yard effort.
“A great way to start the season,” said Terry, who finished with 69 yards rushing and 40 yards on six receptions. “We want to stay focused all season and not take any opponent lightly.”
Quarterback Jared Lanpher, who had two touchdown passes to Terry and who scored on a 1-yard dive into the end zone, agreed.
“I don’t know if we could have played a more perfect first half,” Lanpher said. “Darrian was running wild and we scored the first six times we had the ball.
“Then we scored to open the third quarter – so we have the ball seven times and score seven touchdowns.”
That comment caught the attention of defensive lineman Jordan Chrisman, who had a sack and served as an anchor for the defensive line all night long.
“I was walking off the field at the half and I asked (offensive lineman) Boston Higgins, ‘Did you guys score a touchdown every time you had the ball?’ He told me you did and I just thought, ‘Cool.’ It was a great first half.”
Blue Springs led 20-6 after on quarter as Miller scored on a 52-yard run, Lanpher scored on the 1-yard dive and Terry scored on a 9-yard run.
The Titans scored on a 1-yard run by Erik MacDowell following a 74-yard kickoff return by Zach Gray.
Terry added two second-quarter touchdowns and Miller scored on a 13-yard run to set up the mercy clock in the second half.
Nick Halterman fumbled the ball near midfield and Terry picked it up to score on a 53-yard run.
“It was just our night,” Terry said. “The ball bounced our way.”
Donohoe played his starters just one series in the second half.
“That’s a very good program and a classy program,” West coach Royce Boehm said. “Kelly Donohoe and his staff would never do anything to embarrass a football team. We’re young, but we’re going to get better.”
