Balanced scoring paid off for the St. Mary’s girls basketball team.
Julie Gale’s season-high 13 points led the way as the host Trojans posted a 50-35 Crossroads Conference victory over Maranatha Academy of Shawnee, Kan.
“Everyone scored,” St. Mary’s coach Krista Daniels said. “We had some good sparks from several different players. Ashton Nibert had a good game as well as Julie Gale. It was a good win and a good conference victory.”
JoLynn Glorioso had nine points and Shauna Bauml and Ashton Nibert added eight each for the Trojans (7-7 overall, 3-1 conference).
Emma Bauricek’s 13 points guided Maranatha.
The Trojans never looked back after taking a 12-4 first-quarter lead and extending it to 40-20 after three quarters.
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS 50, GRAIN VALLEY 43: Excelsior Springs closed with an 18-1 run to stun visiting Grain Valley in a Missouri River Valley Conference West game.
“With about five minutes left, we were ahead 42-32,” Grain Valley coach Steve Broughton said. “I thought for 28 minutes we played really, really well and as well as we have played all season. We had some good individual performances. Ashley Bundren played really well.
“We took quick shots late. It was disappointing, but I thought our girls played really well actually.”
Excelsior outscored the Eagles (13-8, 5-2 MRVC West) 20-7 in the fourth quarter.
Taylor Lipps hit four 3-pointers in leading the Eagles in scoring with 12 points. Bundren finished with 11.
Lexa Polmariz scored 12 points to lead the host Tigers.
Grain Valley romped 48-15 in the junior varsity game.
ATCHISON (KAN.) 63, VAN HORN 44: Brandi Tyson scored 21 points, missing her career-high total by one, but it wasn’t enough as Van Horn suffered a non-conference home loss to Atchison.
”This game we could have won, should have won and could have won if we got our fundamentals down,” coach Van Horn coach Anne Rice said. “We had some great moments and, at times, all of the fundamentals flew out the window. We are still learning and improving and making strides in the right direction.”
Atchison outscored Van Horn (2-15) 21-9 in the second quarter for a commanding 32-18 lead. The Falcons outscored Atchison 16-14 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 46-34 but couldn’t get any closer.
Shelby West added 10 points to the Van Horn attack.
Courtney Calhoon guided Atchison with 19.
LEE’S SUMMIT 44, LEE’S SUMMIT NORTH 36: The lack of execution down the stretch cost host Lee’s Summit North a Suburban Big Seven victory.
“We missed two blocked shots that we were open and only made 5 of 11  free throws,” North coach Tricia Lillygren said of the fourth quarter in which the Broncos were outscored 15-8.
“The score was tied with two and a half minutes to go. They hit 8 of 10 free throws in the quarter and (Natalie) Branch hit a huge 3 with the game tied. We didn’t do what it took to win the game.”
Desiree Smith scored 18 points and Branch finished with 11 in accounting for all but 15 points for Lee’s Summit (12-8 overall, 6-3 conference). Lauren Dudenhoeffer’s 13 points paced North (15-6, 6-4), which trailed only 29-28 entering the fourth quarter.
North rode Cady Lennan’s 10 points to a 44-39 junior varsity victory.
BLUE SPRINGS 49, TROY BUCHANAN 37: A strong frontline and a strong first half led Blue Springs to a non-conference home win Saturday.
Cee Cee Burris poured in 18 points and fellow post player Tyonna Snow added 10 for the Wildcats, who raced to a 21-12 halftime lead and held on for the win. Blue Springs improved to 17-3.
