Sam Guffey made quite a difference in his first game this season.
The Blue Springs cleanup hitter went 3-for-4 with a key two-run double to help spark the Wildcats to an 8-2 non-conference victory over host Blue Valley (Kan.) Northwest in a makeup game Friday afternoon.
“Sam got a concussion in practice the Thursday before our first game and hasn’t been able to play until now,” Wildcats coach Marc Hines said. “It was good to have him back because he really helps make the whole lineup better because we could shift people back into their normal spots in the order.”
Guffey sparked Blue Springs’ 14-hit attack with his two-run double in a three-run first inning. He then scored on an RBI single by Andrew Cottle for all the runs the Wildcats would need.
Jordan Brown hit a leadoff home run to fuel a two-run second inning.
Kyle Seithel (1-0) capitalized on the run support, throwing a complete game victory. He allowed seven hits and one walk and struck out seven. The senior pitcher also added two hits and an RBI.
Keeston Terry went 3-for-3 with three stolen bases and scored three runs and Cottle finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the WIldcats (3-2).
“We really hit the ball well,” Hines said. “That’s the most hits we’ve had this season. We had a good approach at the plate – we were aggressive. I was really pleased with the way we hit. And Kyle pitched a very good game.”
MARSHALL TOURNAMENT: The Grain Valley bats started Friday well, but ended sluggishly as the Eagles split two games in the Marshall Tournament.
Grain Valley pounded out 11 hits in a 12-0 win over host Marshall.
David Richards homered, while Jordan Oddo had three hits. Payton Bosserman threw the five-inning shutout, scattering two hits and striking out 11.
In the second game, the Eagles (2-1) suffered their first loss of the year, notching only four hits – one an Oddo home run – in an 11-3 loss to Chillicothe, where the Eagles found themselves down 10-0 after two innings.
“The first game, we got good pitching from Payton, key hits and executed well offensively,” Eagles coach Mark Lyford said. “In the second gamethey came out and found holes, and we couldn’t minimize the damage. We had opportunities, but it’s hard to come back from down 10-0.”
The Eagles play two more games Saturday in the tournament.
WINNETONKA 13, RAYTOWN 2: Winnetonka took advantage of six Raytown errors for an easy nonconference victory at Robinson School.
“It was an ugly game,” Raytown coach Jaime Oyler said. “A lot of the errors were on easy fly balls we didn’t catch. We also made some mental mistakes. You aren’t going to win many games playing like that. I thought Winnetonka was a pretty good team.”
Vince Spilker accounted for the Raytown runs with a two-run, first-inning homer. He also singled. Darius Hampton added two singles. Cody Robinson, the first of four pitchers, took the loss for Raytown (3-3).
