The Dalton Krysa show for Fort Osage didn’t get started until the Indians struck twice by the air against host Belton in a Suburban Middle Six game.
The Indians piled up 304 yards on the ground with Krysa picking up 230 on 27 attempts.
Krysa scored twice — once on a 74-yard burst in the third quarter and another on a 16-yard scamper in the final quarter.
“It felt good to get our running game going,” Indians coach Ryan Schartz said. “Dalton finally got off the schneid with two touchdowns. Our offensive line played well. And our defense – they’re playing really well.”
Before Krysa’s scoring, Bret Sutton hauled in a five-yard pass from Edward Pearl with 6:03 showing in the first quarter and Parker Jones grabbed a 36-yard aerial from Pearl with 8:24 left in the third quarter.
Zach Jungmeyer kicked a 21-yard field goal in the second quarter and made all four of his extra-point attempts.
Despite the offensive fireworks, Schartz couldn’t say enough about his team’s defense.
“I’m so happy with our defensive staff,” Schartz said. “They had a great game plan. That was a pretty physical Belton team. That (running back) Casey Lewis – he’s about 250. He’s a big kid, a tough kid. I’m so happy for Coach (Jon) Olyler. They had a nice game plan and excecuted it.”
PARK HILL SOUTH 42, TRUMAN 14: The Panthers (1-3, 1-1) scored the final 36 points to cruise to a Suburban Big Six triumph over the Patriots (0-4, 0-2) at Park Hill.
Michael Clark helped the Patriots gain the early lead by scoring on a 21-yard run and Clark added another on a 50-yard spurt before South responded with its scoring outburst.
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS 27, GRAIN VALLEY 20: Improved tackling will be the order of business in the Eagle practice sessions this week.
Excelsior Springs quarterback Nick Anderson appeared to be tackled for a loss, but he managed to scramble loose and connected on a 65-yard scoring pass to Seth Morton in the fourth-quarter to allow the Tigers (2-2, 1-1) to edge the Eagles (2-2, 0-1) in a Missouri River Valley Conference West Division game at Excelsior.
“We didn’t button up our tackling on that play and they made us pay,” Grain Valley coach Forrest Rovello said. “We didn’t tackle well tonight and we aren’t good tacklers at the present time.
“This is one that we should have won. We had over 500 yards of total offense and didn’t get it done. We’re going to have to put this one behind us and get better.”
Trace Goade was the leading ground gainer for the Eagles with 98 yards on 15 carries. He scored on three and one-yard runs.
David Richards also caught a 49-yard scoring strike from Goade. Richards had eight catches for 187 yards.
LONE JACK 7, ST. MARY’S 6: The Trojans (2-2, 0-1) couldn’t captialize on a fourth-quarter opportunity and dropped a Crossroads Conference heartbreaker to the Mules (2-2, 1-1) at Kaw Field in Sugar Creek.
The Trojans had a first-and-goal situation from the 3 with less than three minutes to play. But St. Mary’s coughed up a fumble and allowed Lone Jack to run out the clock.
“We had our chances,” St. Mary’s coach John Gresham said. “We just couldn’t get it in when we needed to.
“Our defense played great. I can’t say enough about how well they played.”
The Trojans took the early lead when Paul Baker scored on a 5-yard run with 4:13 left in the first quarter.
The Mules completed only one of seven passes.
But that lone completion by Dalton Moss resulted in a 28-yard reception for a score with 2:00 left in the third quarter. Seth Vie booted the extra point to account for the Mules’ margin of victory.
WARRENSBURG 71, VAN HORN 12: The Falcons (0-4) found a way to strike early in a loss to the Tigers (1-3) at Warrensburg.
Austin Temple connected with Lucas Hood on a 85-yard scoring play in the first quarter.
“It was good to see us make the big play early against their starters,” Van Horn coach Jeff Tolbert said. “I thought our young players responded well and didn’t give up.
“We had multiple breakdowns to led to a lot of scoring on their part. Despite that, I like how our players continued to play. We just have to find a way to step it up and continue to improve.”
Temple accounted for the final Falcon score on a five-yard run in the fourth quarter.
The loss was the worst Van Horn defeat since Warrensburg defeated the Falcons, 73-0, in a Sept. 27, 2002 game.
RAYTOWN SOUTH 49, NORTH KANSAS CITY 13: The Cardinals (4-0, 1-0) ran for 441 yards on the ground and scored a seemingly easy Suburban Middle Six over the Hornets (0-4, 0-1) at Chitwood Stadium in Raytown.
Ronnell Garner led the Cardinal ground game by picking up 193 yards on 10 carries, including a 65-yard scoring burst with 11:33 showing in the third quarter.
Isaiah Turner gained 93 yards on four carries and scored twice, once on a 46-yard run with 8:01 left in the opening quarter and another on a 45-yard scamper with 6:04 to play in the first half.
Dajuan Beard scored on an 18-yard run with 40 seconds left in the opening half and hauled in a 36-yard pass from Dennis Tanner with 8:26 showing in the third quarter.
Dorian Shelton scored the final South TD on a 14-yard run with 40 seconds left in the game.
Sean King had a first-quarter safety and Tate Thissen kicked five extra points to round out the Cardinal scoring.
“It was nice to play at home and get a conference win,” South coach David Allie said. “North Kansas City is better than its record indicates. We did a good job of playing aggressively at first and we weren’t flat in the second half.”
LEE’S SUMMIT WEST 58, RAYTOWN 0: Lee’s Summit West improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Suburban Middle Six with an easy home victory over Raytown as Aaron Vanderpool rushed 11 times for 109 yards and two touchdowns.
West coasted after taking 45-0 halftime lead.
Will Richards returned a punt 55 yards and B.J. Jackson ran 5 yards and passed 25 yards to Mark Robinson for first quarter touchdowns. The Titans also recovered a safety.
In the second quarter, Vanderpool had scoring runs of 25 and 34 yards, Jordan Wade ran 4 yards and Stephen Welling recorded a safety as the Titans posted 23 more points.
James Ritch dashed 55 yards and Mick Medlock returned an intercepted pass 25 yards for final West touchdowns in the third quarter. Andrew Holt kicked five extra points.
The West defense held Raytown (0-4) to 62 total yards.
RAYMORE-PECULIAR 28, LEE’S SUMMIT NORTH 15: Raymore-Peculiar remained undefeated with a tough Suburban Big Seven victory over host Lee’s Summit North.
The Panthers improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference. North dropped to 2-2 and 1-1.
