Chris Burns ran, David Richards caught and Austin Gouldsmith passed Grain Valley to a 34-14 victory over Marshall Friday night.
Burns ran 15 times for 186 yards and two touchdowns and Richards caught nine passes from Gouldsmith for 172 yards and two TDs.
Trace Goade was another standout with a 3-yard TD run and 24 tackles.
“We played much better defense than last week,” Grain Valley coach Forrest Rovello said. “But we had three fumbles going in to score. We could have scored a lot more points if we hadn’t turned the ball over.”
Gouldsmith passed 26 yards to Richards and Alec Velasquez kicked the extra point, giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead after one quarter.
Burns in the second quarter dashed 30 yards and Velasquez kicked the 14th point.
Marshall closed to within 14-7 in the third quarter on Matt Jacobs’ 1-yard run and Brian Bergstrom’s extra point.
Grain Valley retaliated on Gouldsmith’s 62-yard scoring pass to Richards.
In the fourth quarter, Goade ran 3 yards and Gouldsmith hit Richards for a two-point conversion pass as Grain Valley boosted its lead to 28-7.
Marshall struck back on a 50-yard run by Marty Kays and Bergstrom’s extra point.
Grain Valley put the game out of reach on Burns’ 48-yard run.
The Eagles totaled 452 yards and held Marshall to 287.
ST. MARY’S 31, ST. PAUL’S 9: A strong running game enabled St. Mary’s to overcome an early 9-0 deficit and defeat St. Paul’s Lutheran of Concordia.
Henry Hadley rushed nine times for 107 yards, caught a 25-yard scoring pass a and returned an interception 25 yards for another TD and Paul Baker gained 118 yards on 16 carries and one score plus pulling in a 66-yard pass for a TD.
Not to be overlooked was the performance of quarterback Nick Vlasin. All three of his completed passes went for touchdowns and 116 yards.
The Trojans (1-1) totaled 424 yards, including 308 rushing on the way to 20 first downs. The defense held St. Paul’s to 11 first downs and 165 total yards.
St. Paul’s struck for an opening-quarter 9-0 lead on Joe Kanuk’s 19-yard field goal and Jordan Bredehoeft’s 1-yard run.
The Trojans retaliated with 19 second-quarter points. Baker ran 2 yards, kicked an extra point and pulled in a 66-yard pass from Vlasin and Hadley returned an intercepted pass 25 yards.
In the third quarter, Vlasin passed 25 yards to Hadley and then hooked up with Kyle Willms for a 25-yard scoring strike in the fourth quarter.
“It was a good game,” St. Marys coach John Gresham said. “We came out flat but picked it up in the second quarter and dominated the rest of the game.”
RAYTOWN SOUTH 26, PLATTE COUNTY 2: Raytown South improved to 2-0 on the young season by combining a potent offense and stellar defense to defeat host Platte County.
Isaiah Turner rambled 16 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns and two two-point conversions. Ronnell Garner ran nine times for 95 yards, and Dajuan Beard caught eight Dennis Tanner passes for 81 yards and one TD.
Defensively, the Cardinals held Platte County to four first downs and111 total yards, including12 rushing.
“We had some opportunities in the first half and let them go but in the second half we refocused and dominated the game,” South coach Dave Allie said.
Platte County (0-2) took a 2-0 lead on a safety when South recovered its own fumble in the end zone.
But Turner’s 2-yard plunge and subsequent conversion run gave South an 8-2 lead in the second quarter.
South put up 15 more points in the third quarter. Turner ran 2 yards and for another 2-point conversion and Beard hauled in 5-yard pass from Dennis Tanner. Tate Thissen kicked an extra point.
Thissen booted a 19-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
LEE’S SUMMIT 30, PARK HILL SOUTH 2: Darryl Slaughter ran 19 yards for 97 yards and three touchdowns plus three two-point conversions and sophomore Corbin Berkstresser completed 12 of 19 passes for 132 yards and one TD as host Lee’s Summit posted a surprisingly easy victory over Park Hill South.
The Tigers (1-1) rolled up 327 total yards and the defense held the Panthers to 126.
Slaughter had scoring runs of 2 and 3 yards and a pair of two-point conversions, giving Lee’s Summit a 16-0 lead in the opening quarter.
Park Hill South posted its only points of the game in a second quarter on a safety when Lee’s Summit snapped the ball out of its own end zone.
Slaughter’s 75-yard dash gave the Tigers a safe 22-2 lead with 8:11 remaining in the half.
In the third quarter Berkstresser plunged 1 yard for a TD and Slaughter tacked on his third 2-point conversion run.
