Chiefs’ finale warms up cold fans

I just got back from watching a surprisingly good Blue Springs South boys basketball team claim a 58-50 home victory over Park Hill, and I can almost feel my fingers and my toes.

The long walk to my car was breathtaking. No, the scenery wasn’t breathtaking. It was so cold I couldn’t catch my breath.

When it took a couple of cranks on the ignition to get the motor running, I was thinking, “It’s way t-o-o-o-o cold to even think about being stranded in the arctic like conditions.”

I expected a polar bear to walk through the parking lot as I gritted my teeth and prayed that my engine would start. When it did, I said a special little thank you and headed home – wondering if it would ever be warm again.

I heard at the game that most area school districts had already closed down for today and it looks like the weather is going to do nothing but get chillier and snowier as the week progresses.

Where’s some global warming when we really need it?

As I savor the thought of a warm shower, I thought I’d touch on a few issues that piqued my interest while I was on vacation the past week:

• How about those Kansas City Chiefs? At least, I think that was our beloved team that put a 44-point hurting on the Donkeys up in Denver.

Where has that team been all season? We saw them once, in a home victory over Pittsburgh, but for the most part, Todd Haley’s squad has been AWOL all season.

I know everyone is all geeked up over the win in Sunday’s finale, but two things bother me.

First, new general manager Scott Pioli is supposed to be a great judge of talent. If so, why wasn’t Jamaal Charles the starting running back all season?

I know he’s small and can’t take a 30-carry load for 16 games, but over the past eight weeks he’s been the second most productive back in the league – and he’s carried the ball behind the same offensive line that Larry Johnson did nothing but complain about.

And I know that Derrick Johnson isn’t going to return two interceptions for touchdowns in every game he plays, but the former No. 1 draft pick has been in Haley’s doghouse all season, only to emerge in the season finale looking like the reincarnation of Derrick Thomas.

Derrick Johnson is a restricted free agent and it’s going to be interesting to see if he’s wearing crimson and gold in 2010.

• Go check out the Missouri Mavericks at 7 tonight at the Independence Events Center. They are a win away from reaching the .500 mark for the first time this season and the Central Hockey League team is the best show in town.

I didn’t know what to think when I was told the Mavericks would be my regular beat, but now, I’m a certified hockey nut. The Events Center is the perfect venue for the team and the fans of Independence and the surrounding communities have taken the Mavericks to heart.

I guarantee you will have a great time at the game, and the Mavs are on the brink of putting together a real run for the playoffs. They had a standing-room-only sellout at their last home game and the electricity this team generates has caught me, and a lot of other people, by surprise.

I knew the Mavs would put a good product on the ice, but I didn’t think our community would embrace them until they had a winning record. I guess after watching the Chiefs muddle through a lackluster season, we’re happy to support a coach and players who leave it all on the ice.

• I am still intrigued and mystified by Tiger Woods’ mistress-gate.

How does the most recognized professional athlete in the world expect to have liaisons with women across the country and not get caught?

He has done such a wonderful job of creating a false image that he must have got caught up in the hype that surrounds his every move and felt like he could pay his way out of any embarrassing situation.

He will come back to the PGA Tour and he will continue to win golf tournaments, but will anyone care?

I know I won’t.
