St. Joseph Central outscored Blue Springs South 18-11 in the fourth quarter to claim a 42-29 Suburban Big Seven victory Friday night.
South (6-6 overall, 1-4 conference) could never recover from a 15-11 first-half deficit.
“We had a slow start and came out flat,” South coach Fawna Harrison said. “It’s always hard playing there. We need to play with more intensity. We were timid offensively.”
Zakila Smith tried her best to lift South to the win by scoring 17 points with four 3-pointers. Abby Eagleburger’s 14 points, Reid Brown’s 12 and Kari Schram’s 10 led Central (5-7, 2-4).
EAST BUCHANAN 52, VAN HORN 18: It was a tough night for Van Horn in the fifth-place game of the Lathrop Bill Burns Classic.
The Falcons not only lost the game but standout Rebecca Robins left the game with 1:30 remaining in the second quarter because of a sprained ankle.
“We do not know the extent of the sprain,” Van Horn co-coach Julie Crowell said. “Still, we were only down 21-11 at halftime. We were still within reach.”
But Van Horn (2-9) was outscored 31-7 in the second half.
“We have to learn to be OK with Rebecca gone,” Crowell said. “We need other people to step up. We’re hoping she is going to be OK. She is a valuable part of the team.”
Robins finished with six points before her injury and Shelby West added five to lead the Falcons in scoring.
