The final score might not indicate it, but for a brief moment or two Friday night at Lee’s Summit North High School, the Blue Springs High School football team was in need of a boost.
They got it from Keeston Terry.
The two-time all-state wide receiver grabbed Warren Frevert’s kickoff on the 1-yard line and returned it 99 yards to give the Wildcats a 28-7 lead and take all the wind out of the Broncos’ sails following Aaron Sorrel’s 93-yard kickoff return for a score just 26 seconds before on the preceding play.
The Wildcats went on to claim a convincing 45-14 victory.
“We work, and work and work on kickoffs and that’s the second (touchdown) we’ve given up this year,” Wildcats coach Kelly Donohoe said. “Keeston really gave us a shot in the arm when he came right back and took it all the way.
“When they scored, they cut into our lead and got right back into the game. They’re a darn good team. They were sky high following that (28-12) win last week over Blue Springs South, and we were very concerned coming over here.
“We had the good first quarter, then took the 21-0 lead – and what do we do? We give up the touchdown on the following kickoff. Then, Keeston comes back and scores for us and we got all the momentum back. It was a great play by a great player.”
The win improved Blue Springs to 6-1 overall record and 4-0 in the conference, while the Broncos fell to 2-5 and 1-4.
“I’ve been close to going all the way a couple of times this season,” said Terry, who also caught 10 passes for 85 yards. “I got the ball, got some nice blocks, found a seam and was off.”
When asked what it was like when he broke through the initial wave of tacklers, he just smiled and said, “When you see nothing but the end zone in front of you, it’s a great feeling.”
The victory gives the Wildcats a full head of steam heading into a home district game next Friday against crosstown rival Blue Springs South.
“This is the type of win you want going into district next week,” senior quarterback Jared Lanpher said after another solid night, going 14 of 18 for 152 yards and a 37-yard touchdown.
“We were really focused this week, and a win like this will help us keep that focus and intensity. When you open district against a rival like Blue Springs South, you better be ready – and we will be ready.”
Lanpher capped an opening 80-yard drive with a 37-yard scoring strike to Nick Halterman.
Darrian Miller then scored on a 62-yard run to make it 14-0 in the first quarter.
The Wildcats tagged 17 points on the scoreboard in the second quarter with Miller scoring on a 6-yard run, Terry scoring on the kickoff return and Cody Best nailing a 33-yard field goal with just 15 seconds left in the half.
Blue Springs iced the game and claimed a short-lived running clock in the third quarter as Miller scored on a 2-yard run in his lone series and backup Alex Shoemaker scored on an 8-yard run.
Donohoe then brought in the reserves and North’s backup quarterback, Pete Haggard, threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to B.J. Dunbar to close out the scoring.
Miller finished with 18 carries for 200 yard and three scores. He now has scored 111 points this season (please see column).
