The first Region 16 victory for the Metropolitan Community College-Blue River men’s soccer team surprised even its own coach.
The Trail Blazers rallied from a 3-0 deficit to edge East Central College of Union, Mo., 4-3 Tuesday afternoon at the Anheuser-Busch Center near St. Louis.
Sam Braverman scored his second goal on an assist from Van Horn High School graduate Yacine Hamchaoui to lift the Trail Blazers to the victory.
Hamchaoui made the run and crossed it in front to Braverman, who buried it in the far left corner for the game-winner.
“It’s really kind of unbelievable,” Blue River coach Dave Owens said. “It’s a great win for us, especially being our first conference win. In soccer, when teams get down 3-0, winning generally doesn’t happen. I thought our guys showed a lot of heart to come back. It’s a fantastic win.”
Michael Brennan deflected in a Blake Wahlbrink corner kick with the game-tying goal.
Braverman scored off an assist by Blue Springs graduate Matt Beaver for the first goal. Hamchaoui assisted on a goal by Blue Springs South graduate Zane Christenson to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Trail Blazers scored on four of their eight shots to improve to 5-3-1 overall and 1-2 in Region 16 with the win. They return to action at home 1 p.m. Saturday against St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley.
Tuesday’s win followed a 2-1 home loss to Crowder College of Neosho, Mo., on Friday.
Blue Springs South graduate Kyle Young scored the lone goal for Blue River on an assist from Fort Osage grad Bryan Henny.
The Trail Blazers lost despite outshooting Crowder 23-10.
