Two stalling points in overtime cost Jace Banner of Van Horn a state championship.
Tied 1-1 entering the second overtime, Banner earned an escape point to go up 2-1.
But in the second part of the second overtime, where he tried to ride out Ross Bain of Lawson, Banner was called for stalling twice, which gave up two points and gave Bain a 3-2 victory for the Class 1 215-pound title at the MSHSAA Wrestling Championships Saturday.
“It’s disappointing that the wrestling doesn’t get to decide the outcome of the match,” Van Horn coach Jeff Tolbert said.
Banner said he didn’t know what the score was or he may have tried things differently.
“I didn’t even know I was losing,” he said. “I looked at the scoreboard at the end, saw it was 3-2 and just lost it.
“It’s very frustrating. It should have went differently. I didn’t want that to happen. But now I’m looking forward to next year.”
After the match ended, Tolbert was visibly upset with the officiating of the match, especially since Bain did not appear to take a shot on Banner the entire match.
“That’s his style,” Tolbert said. “That was his game plan, and he executed it well, obviously.”
Banner said this loss is motivating him for next year.
“I’m going to use this a lot,” he said. “I have the experience of wrestling in a championship match now. I’m going to use it to my advantage next year.
“This gives me all the motivation in the world.”
Despite the loss, Tolbert said he was happy with what Banner was able to do, getting to the state finals in his first year wrestling in Missouri.
“I’m proud of him,” Tolbert said. “He’s come a long way as a person. Obviously we’re disappointed. We wish he could have won.”
