The new kid made an impact. And how.
Caleb Sims, a junior transfer from Rockhurst, rushed for what’s believed to be a school-record 337 yards and four touchdowns on 43 carries in powering William Chrisman to a tough 37-30 season-opening victory over Ruskin Friday night at Independence All-School Stadium.
Sims helped the Bears (1-0) stake a 24-0 first-quarter lead with touchdown runs of 48, 2 and 52 yards. Jeramie Sagastume booted a 39-yard field goal with 1 minute, 50 seconds left in the quarter.
However, Ruskin sophomore quarterback Tino Martin helped Ruskin get back in it with three straight TD passes. During the second quarter, Martin tossed a 5-yarder to DeMarte Pearson, followed by an 80-yarder to Tykeem Holden.
Martin’s 37-yard scoring pass to Dwight Finnell cut it to 24-18 with 10:08 left in the third quarter.
Sims’ 8-yard TD run made it 30-18 Bears with 7:38 left in the third quarter.
Martin then threw a 39-yard scoring pass to Finnell with 4:37 left in the quarter and scored on a 1-yard run with 6:40 left in the fourth quarter to tie it.
Devin Patrick’s 14-yard interception return and Sagastume’s extra-point kick with 4:43 to play secured the victory for new head coach Mark Simcox and the Bears, who snapped a nine-game losing streak.
