St. Joseph, MO —

Grain Valley tennis coach Randy Draper teaches physical education, but Friday he was all about math.
Draper and the Eagles kept adding up points, trying to figure out a way to finish in the top four o fthe Class 1 District 8 Tournament and advance to sectional play. However, the Eagles finished fifth, three points out.
“We’re all trying to do math late in the day,” Draper said. “We were trying to figure out in the last matches if this was going to happen. It’s our first year (as a program) and we’re getting to do math. This is the one time I was excited to do math.”
Michael Draper finished sixth in singles, while the doubles team of Colin Chastain and Trevor Griffin also finished sixth. Jake Pugh won two matches in singles, while the doubles team of Ryan Marrs and Derek Bowlin also won two matches.
