When Blue Springs downed crosstown rival Blue Springs South 42-0 to open district play last Friday, Keeston Terry could have felt like the forgotten man.
He watched teammate Darrian Miller run for six touchdowns while the Wildcats put the clamps on the Jaguars for the huge shutout victory.
“We wanted to get Keeston involved against South,” Blue Springs coach Kelly Donohoe said, “but it was like Darrian scored every time he touched the ball. We told Keeston we’d get him involved tonight – and we did.”
Terry was a one-man wrecking crew Friday night in a 51-21 Class 6 District 8 victory at Liberty.
The two-time all-state wide receiver caught a 48-yard touchdown pass from Jared Lanpher on the second play of the game, threw a 13-yard scoring strike to Jordan Durrell, picked off a Kevin VonEgdom pass and followed with his second touchdown reception of the night on a 40-yard strike from Lanpher.
“This was a fun game,” said Terry, who has made a verbal commitment to play football at Kansas. “I don’t get much of a chance to play defense, so my favorite personal highlight was getting the interception. But the only thing any of us care about is the win.”
Terry finished the night with seven receptions for 139 yards and the respect of his teammates.
“We really wanted to get everyone involved in the offense tonight, and I think we did,” said Lanpher, who was 10 of 14 passing for 261 yards and four touchdowns. “Keeston had the big night, Darrian had another big night carrying the ball and I’d made a promise to Nick Halterman that he was going to get a touchdown pass tonight – and it took us until the fourth quarter, but he got his TD, too.”
Miller, who was struck on the hip by a helmet and had a slow first half, finished with 201 yards on 17 carries. He caught a 51-yard touchdown pass from Lanpher and scored on runs of 60 and 58 yards to up his area scoring lead to 28 touchdowns.
Following the Blue Jays’ final fourth-quarter score, Lanpher and Halterman hooked up on a 58-yard bomb that secured the Wildcats victory.
Blue Springs is 8-1 overall, won the Suburban Big Seven outright with a 6-0 record and is 2-0 in district play. Liberty is 7-2, 5-1 and 1-1.
A win next Friday at Peve Stadium over 1-1 Columbia Rock Bridge will give the Wildcats the outright district title.
“I can’t even begin to tell you how proud I am of this team,” Donohoe said. “To follow up a big win over the crosstown rival, with a performance like the one we had tonight – in a hostile environment against a very good team – just tells you how far we’ve come as a team this year.
“I was so happy to see all the guys on offense – unheralded guys like Jordan Durrell and Nick Halterman, who mean so much to this team – get involved. The defense was just lights out.
“They scored 21 points – but they’re a team that’s capable of putting a lot of points in the scoreboard. We had a couple of big defensive stands, a couple of interceptions and Jordan Chrisman just had a monster game (please see column).”
Miller, the area rushing leader with 1,840 yards, scored all three touchdowns in the third quarter.
“It was about time I did something,” he joked. “Keeston and Jared took care of business tonight. I just wanted to make my contribution. Keeston showed everyone what type of player he is tonight.”
