The Kansas City Royals added a little potential bullpen help Thursday.

The Royals announced they had signed former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Brad Thompson to a minor league contract for the 2010 season.

Thompson, 27, posted a 21-17 record with a 4.36 earned run average in 185 games over the last five seasons for the Cardinals. That number included 32 starts.

Thompson, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound right-hander was 2-6 with a 4.84 ERA in 32 appearances, including eight starts, with St. Louis last season.

A 16th-round draft pick out of Dixie State College in Utah in 2002, Thompson was named the Cardinals Rookie of the Year in 2005 after going 4-0 with a 2.95 ERA in 40 relief appearances.
