At 7 p.m. Monday, the Grain Valley football team will attempt to win only the second Class 4 postseason game in school history.
The Eagles will travel to Harrisonville to meet the same team that handed them a 37-12 loss in the regular-season finale.
Over the past 17 years, coach Forrest Rovello has seen his Eagles make the climb from Class 2A to Class 4 and he has enjoyed great success on every level.
Last week, the Eagles went to Ruskin High School and handed the Cougars a 51-34 loss that featured the talents of Grain Valley quarterback Austin Gouldsmith and fullback Trace Goade.
Gouldsmith passed for three scores and ran for two touchdowns and Goade ground out important second-half yards that took time off the clock and kept the high-powered Hickman Mills offense off the field.
Goade finished with one touchdown, 100 yards on the ground and an interception. Just another night at the office for the only Eagle who plays on both sides of the ball.
Goade, Gouldsmith and the Eagles hope to find a way to make Monday’s game a lot more interesting than the regular-season finale.
“There’s a reason they play the games,” Rovello said, arching an eyebrow. “We’re going to show up Monday and give it everything we have.”
And that might just be enough to keep this Class 4 dream alive for another week or two.
