The Missouri Mavericks continued to fill out their roster Wednesday in preparation for the opening of training camp on Saturday.
The new Independence Central Hockey League team announced Wednesday that it signed defensemen Sean Perkins, Mark Van Vliet and Jared Lavender.
Perkins, 22, a 5-foot-9, 190-pound native of Commerce, Mich., helped the Cincinnati Cyclones win the East Coast Hockey League’s Kelly Cup title as a rookie, tallying 11 points in 44 games. He played four games with Cincinnati last year before playing overseas.
“Sean was highly sought after this offseason, and we are proud to have a former ECHL champion on our roster,” Mavericks head coach Scott Hillman said. “He is a good offensive defenseman who will definitely help out our blueline.”
Van Vliet, 25, a 6-foot, 170-pound native of Dorchester, Ontario, played most of his rookie season last year under Hillman with the Knoxville (Tenn.) Ice Bears of the Southern Professional Hockey League. He had 21 points in 55 games in Knoxville, before playing six games with Cincinnati in the ECHL. Hillman said that Van Vliet, who had 119 points in 114 games in college, gives the Mavericks some versatility.
“Mark is a slick-skating defenseman who also has the ability to play forward,” Hillman said. “His versatility will be needed for a grueling 64-game season.”
Lavender, 25, will be a rookie after the 5-11, 190-pounder spent the last four years at Castleton State College in Vermont. The Cleveland Heights, Ohio, native had 35 points in 97 collegiate games and served as captain his senior season and assistant captain the two previous seasons.
“Jared is a strong and physical defenseman, specifically in the corners in our defensive zone,” Hillman said. “He will also be a vital asset to our team’s penalty kill.”
The Mavericks now have 23 of a planned 27 to go to camp. The team will narrow that to 19 players before the Oct. 16 season opener at Rapid City, S.D. The Mavericks open their home schedule at the new Independence Events Center Nov. 13-14 against Wichita.
Season, group, 10- and 20-game flex packs and eight-ticket vouchers are now on sale. For more information on tickets or the team, visit online at www.MissouriMavericks.com or call 816-252-PUCK (7825).
