The Crossroads Conference may be one team less for the 2010-11 school year.
Lone Jack has applied for admission to the I-70 Conference.
“We’ll have to wait and see what happens,” said Lone Jack athletic director Jerry MacLean, the former Blue Springs South volleyball coach. “It’s not a done deal. But it would be a good fit for us, geographically and enrollment-wise.”
Reportedly, Lone Jack would replace Windsor, which is headed to the Kaysinger Conference.
Welllington-Napoleon board member Brian White is in support of the Lone Jack application. Wellington-Napoleon superintendent Jeff Ruskey said I-70 members have met to consider the Lone Jack request. The issue likely will be voted on in November.
St. Mary’s athletic director Mike Espinosa said he was unaware of Lone Jack’s desire to move to the I-70, which in addition to Wellington-Napoleon, includes Orrick, Crest Ridge, Concordia, St. Paul’s Lutheran of Concordia and Santa Fe of Alma.
Lone Jack’s enrollment has declined from a high of 200 to the present 157. The school is in its second year as a member of the Crossroads Conference that includes St. Mary’s, Barstow, Lee’s Summit Community Christian, Sherwood and Maranatha Academy of Shawnee, Kan.
Only Lone Jack, St. Mary’s and Sherwood play football. Maranatha competed last season but, because of a lack of numbers, dropped varsity football this fall and reportedly will play a junior varsity schedule the next two years.
Van Horn and Renaissance Academy join the conference next year.
But don’t be surprised if Lone Jack isn’t a I-70 member next year.
“It will be more even for everyone competition-wise,” MacLean said.
• There will be many big stories coming out of the once completed area high school football season. One of the most talked about will be Truman and William Chrisman for the first time defeating Oak Park in the same season.
• Former Hi-Boy Drive in/Post 340 manager and present Fifth District director Gary Stone has been named director of the nine-member American Legion commission.
• The Lee’s Summit’s new swimming/diving facility that opened last month has been named the Lee’s Summit R-7 Aquatic Center.
• A proposal to have separate playoffs for the public and private schools has been rejected by the Arkansas Activities Association.
• Defending Class 6 state champion Hazelwood Central, which is off to a 4-0 start this year after beating Blue Springs South in last year’s championship game, is No. 6 in the Midwest in this week’s USA Today regional rankings.
