The Missouri Mavericks are a point out of first place in the Turner Conference after defeating first-place Colorado 3-1.

“What a game,” Mavericks coach Scott Hillman said Friday night from the Budweiser Events Center. “What a great job by (goaltender) Robby Nolan and what can you say about our guys who kept them from scoring when they had that five-on-three advantage for two minutes - (Mike) Wakita, (Derek) Pallardy and (Nick) Sirota.

“That’s how you get closer to first place, by playing like we played tonight. I’m proud of everyone.”

Nolan stopped 29 of 30 shots and nearly had a shutout and Sirota scored a pair of goals for the Mavericks who improved to 12-7-3 on the season.

Forward Riley Nelson scored the lone goal for the Eagles with just 2:06 remaining in regulation.

The teams will square off again at 8:05 p.m. Saturday (KCWJ, 1030 AM).

Simon Watson gave the Mavericks the lead just 4:17 into the opening period.

Almost eight minutes into the third period, the Mavericks were whistled for two penalties giving Colorado a great opportunity to tie the game.  Sirota, Pallardy and Wakita killed the resulting five-on-three power play without a break in the action to keep the Mavericks on top.

At the 15:58 mark of the third, Sirota gave Missouri a 2-0 lead when he came down the right wing, faked a slap shot to get the goaltender out of position and snapped the puck into the open net. He was assisted by Bill Vandermeer on what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

Sirota went to the penalty box directly after the goal when he was called for slashing, and Missouri was whistled for too many men on the ice at the 17:41 mark giving the Eagles another five-on-three power play.

Nelson scored for Colorado on the ensuing power play to cut the lead to 2-1 and ending Nolan’s bid for a shutout with just 2:06 remaining in the game.  Missouri was still shorthanded in the final minute of the game, but Sirota put the game out of reach when he took a pass from Olivier Filion on a two-on-one and beat Penner to make it 3-1.
