Brent Thiessen, the president and general manager of the Missouri Mavericks, left the 2012 CHL All-Star Banquet Tuesday night in Chino Valley, Ariz., with an unexpected piece of hardware.
Thiessen was awarded the 2012 Willis of Texas/N. Thomas Berry Commitment Cup.
The Commitment Cup is given each year at the CHL All-Star Game to a person who has shown “great dedication and passion for not only the CHL but the sport of hockey.”
“It was a bit of a shock,” Thiessen said Wednesday morning from Prescott Valley, Ariz., the site of the all-star game that will feature Mavericks second-year forward Andrew Courtney.
“I am very honored with the recognition. It’s been an honor working in the CHL for three different organizations (Colorado, Arizona and Missouri) and I have enjoyed every minute of it.
“To receive an honor like this from your peers and colleagues is very, very special.
Thiessen was presented the award by CHL Commisioner Emeritus N. Thomas Berry.
“We are very happy to present Brent with this award,” CHL Commissioner Duane Lewis said. “His outstanding vision and the success he has experienced is respected among all the peers in his industry, and his commitment to excellence is unmatched in all of minor pro sports.”
The Colorado native was named the CHL Executive of the Year in 2008 and the Missouri Mavericks franchise was the CHL Franchise of the Year in 2011 under Thiessen’s direction.
“It’s been a great couple of days down here in Arizona,” Thiessen added. “Every time I’ve seen Andrew he’s been sporting an ear-to-ear smile. He really deserves the all-star recognition and he can’t wait for the tonight’s game.”
