One strong inning was enough for Grain Valley’s baseball team Tuesday.
The Eagles scored four in the fourth inning of a 5-4 Missouri River Valley Conference West win over host Odessa.
“It was a hard-fought win for us,” Eagles coach Mark Lyford said. “It was close all the way. We put up four in the fourth and just hung on.”
Braxton Anthony picked up the win, throwing six innings, while Payton Bosserman pitched a scoreless seventh for the save.
David Duncan drove in two runs for the Eagles (12-3, 5-1 MRVC West) while Austin Gouldsmith added two hits. George Cruse scored a pair of runs.
VAN HORN 9, KC NORTHEAST 4: A strong start helped keep the host Falcons undefeated.
Van Horn (9-0) scored four in the first inning and two in the second inning to grab a win at Roper Stadium. Aaron Driskell homered, while Randy Arcia had a pair of hits.
“I was pretty happy,” Falcons coach Tim Wilson said. “The kid they had pitching was a good ballplayer. He just wasn’t getting much help defensively at the beginning.”
RAYMORE-PECULIAR 9, BLUE SPRINGS 1: The offensive woes for Blue Springs continued Tuesday.
The Wildcats scored one run or less for the third straight game, as they dropped a Suburban Big Seven road game.
Ray-Pec scored six runs in the second inning to put the game away.
“The second inning kind of broke our backs,” Wildcats coach Marc Hines said. “One bad inning has killed us in the last three games. We just need to learn how to get out of it.”
Jordan Martinez had two singles for the Wildcats (8-9, 3-4 Big Seven).
WINNETONKA 8, WILLIAM CHRISMAN 5: Four sixth-inning runs appeared to be enough for the Bears.
That was before visiting Winnetonka answered with four in the top of the seventh at Crysler Stadium Tuesday.
“We battled back and put up four,” Bears coach Justin Woods said. “But we put 12 people on base without a hit, either walking or hitting people.”
Dylan Parrish and Korey Stucker each drove in a pair of runs for the Bears (3-12). Jojo Taisi and Eddie High each had a pair of hits.
LEE’S SUMMIT NORTH 9, RAYTOWN SOUTH 8: A late Cardinal rally fell just short as North improved to 17-2 on the year.
Raytown South scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth before Caleb Cole was able to get the Broncos out of it.
North jumped out to a 9-2 lead after five and a half innings.
“We were just glad to hang on and get the win,” North coach Jeff Diekmann said. “The Cardinals came storming back in the sixth.”
Miles Shelton had two hits, two RBIs and three stolen bases for the Cardinals. Gavin Stark had three hits and three RBIs. David Longcoy and Kevin Morgan each had two hits. Morgan drove in a pair of runs.
